Get a sneak peek of Les Filles du Roi
As you may know, we've been hard at work developing our latest project: an exciting and innovative new musical co-created by playwright Julie McIsaac and composer Corey Payette. Told in English, French and a dialect of Iroquois, LES FILLES DU ROI is shaping up to be one of our most boundary pushing and thought provoking shows yet.
The story is based on a fascinating slice of Canada's history -- in the mid-1600s, the young female settlers known as the 'filles du roi' were swept up in conflicts over identity and power that shape Canada to this day. Drawing on their own heritage, Julie and Corey are crafting a story that's rooted in history, but feels incredibly relevant to current debates on migration, gender equity and Indigenous sovereignty.
We've come a long way since our first workshop in December, and we'd love to hear what you think.
You're invited to join us for a very special sneak peek reading of the new show, followed by a talk-back and Q & A.

About LES FILLES DU ROI
In the summer of 1665, young fille du roi Marie Jeanne Lespérance arrives at the French settlement of Ville-Marie, filled with hopes for a new life. She is one of the many 'daughters of the King', recruited by the French government to help increase the population of New France. Marie soon discovers that her dreams of love and adventure have implications beyond her personal journey. As a tool of France's colonial ambitions, she's thrust between the competing interests of the French, the nearby Mohawk settlement of Kahnawà:ke, and the British settlements further south. Over the course of four tumultuous seasons, French, Mohawk, Métis and English characters build a complex web of relationships that sets the stage for the Canada we know today.
